2-Year Operation Nets 53 Borderland Residents for Drugs, Cartel Connections

el paso — A 2-year DEA operation targeting the Sinaloa and Juarez Drug Cartels turns up dozens of borderland residents working with the cartels and with illegal synthetic drugs.
The operation labeled "Below The Belt" started in May 2010, and ended December 6, 2012.
It targeted cartel members and drug trafficking organizations, however, DEA officials confirmed with Newschannel 9 the operation is connected to several DEA raids in July at smoke shops throughout the borderland, including El Paso and Las Cruces.
In all, 53 people were arrested in West Texas and New Mexico as part of "Below The Belt."
