EL PASO, TX - Children walked with balloons, but this was anything but a happy outing, it's called "Walk Like MADD." People here have had their loved ones killed by drunk drivers, their lives now remembered with a picture on a cross.
"Walk Like MADD" is appropriate for this weekend. Six people have been killed in El Paso in just five days. Two of them Saturday, the same day as the walk, and police say drinking may have played a role in all the accidents.
"Crashes are happening consistently unfortunately, and like I said this is preventable. Simple steps like calling a cab, calling a loved one, calling a friend to come pick you up will save your life, and the life of another," MADD Executive Director Virginia Gonzalez said.
Perhaps because of all the deadly wrecks this week, police are doing a no-refusal weekend. Officer's will be ready with a warrant to take your blood if you're pulled over and refuse to let an officer check if you're drunk. Friday night, four people were arrested for DWI on El Paso roads.
"The bottom line is that we all drive on the same roads that this crime is being committed on," Gonzalez said.
According to MADD, one in three people will be affected by drunk drivers. That's why "Walk Like MADD" is also used as a fundraiser. Money is needed to teach people the dangers of slamming alcohol down and getting behind the wheel.
"People don't have to die at the hands of a drunk driver. We have to stop the carnage on the road," Gonzalez said.
If the carnage doesn't stop, you or somebody you know could end up walking for your loved one who was killed. Or perhaps worse, you could end up the picture on a sign, another victim of a drunk driver.
