AURORA, CO — At least 12 people are dead, dozens more injured after a heavily armed gunman opened fire inside a crowded Colorado movie theater.
We are now learning the victims are as young as 3 months old.
The number of dead has been downgraded to 12 people, from an initial count of 14. A total of 59 people were wounded, down from an initial count of 50 injured.
Police arrested a heavily armed suspect, identified as James Holmes, 24, of Aurora.
According to Aurora Police, Holmes had a rifle and a handgun on him, and they found another gun inside the theater.
A-T-F agents are investigating where the suspect got his guns.
Investigators also searched his home and car for explosives.
A law enforcement source says a quote: "item of interest" was found in the suspect's apartment but have not said what it is.
A movie-goer says the gunman was wearing a gas mask and used a smoke bomb before he started moving through the theater, shooting people at random.
Another witness described what he saw, "We were watching a scene of the movie, it was a shootout scene, there were guns firing then a loud bangs came from the right of the theater, smoke took over the entire theater and everything and it was really thick. And no one could really see anything," he said.
The multi-plex was packed with people watching the midnight showings of "Dark Knight Rises."
Police said there was a lot of confusion after the first gunshots, because many people thought the sounds were coming from the screen.
Another witness described the chaos after the shooting, "When we got out of the building it was just chaos. You saw injured people. It was this one guy was on all fours crawling. There was this girl spitting up blood. There was bullet holes in some peoples backs, some people's arms. There was one guy who was stripped down to his boxers. It looked like he had been shot in the back or something. It was crazy," he said.
