10-year-old donates money from birthday to help homeless children
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Instead of toys or presents for her birthday, a 10-year-old girl asked for donations to help homeless children in Las Cruces.
Mia Lancaster, 10, presented a check to Jardin De Los Ninos Thursday afternoon.
"I want to give back to the community and I'm very fortunate so I'd like to give back," Lancaster said.
The young lady is a great student, she has helped raise money for the Red Cross and aspires to be a pediatrician.
"Since I was four I've always wanted to help kids," she said.
Mia decided to donate money to Jardin De Los Ninos after mom Nora discussed possibly volunteering at the center.
Mia said it was the perfect place for her to continue her desire in helping other kids.
"They're kids that are homeless they get to stay here and eat here," she said.
Jardin De Los Ninos provides childcare and educational services for an average of about 50 children every month.
"We are here to serve other and to help others," said Executive Director Shirley Jacquez.
Mia said she would like the money to go toward a reading program and said she will continue helping where she can.
"You're never too young to make a difference," she said.
Her donation was matched up to $100 by Lou Sisbarro for a total of $237.
