A Juarez mother who demanded justice for her murdered teenage daughter was shot to death right in front of the Chihuahua Governor's Office. This all happened in the middle of a busy street and caught by surveillance video.
Surveillance video captured the last seconds of Marisela Escobedo Ortiz's life, which she spent running from a gun-wielding suspect who came to take her life.
Marisela had held several protests in Juarez following the murder of her daughter, 16-year-old Rubi Marisol.
Her alleged killer, Marisela claimed, was Rubi's boyfriend, Sergio Rafael Barraza Bocanegra. He was arrested but later set free by a judge. That's when Marisela, joined by others whose relatives had been killed, began her protests.
Marisela decided to move her protest in front the Governor's Office in Chihuahua City after she said nothing was being done to bring her daughter's killer to justice.
Thursday night around 9 o'clock, Marisela was in front of the Governor's Office, along with another person. A white vehicle appeared and someone got out of the vehicle. The gunman went up to Marisela and her companion. The companion ran to hide behind a vehicle while Marisela tried, herself, to flee. Marisela ran across the street, jumping in front of moving vehicles to try to save her life. The gunman was just a few steps behind.
She was shot as she made it to the sidewalk. Another pedestrian, just yards away, barely looked back. After shooting Marisela in the head, the suspect ran back to the white vehicle and took off. Marisela's companion, apparently in shock, ran up to her body and then ran away. Vehicle after vehicle drove by, even a bus, as Marisela's lifeless body lay on the sidewalk. No one stopped to help.
The scene was later sealed with police tape, as investigators tried to piece together what happened.
Chihuahua's Governor, Cesar Duarte, is vowing justice for both Marisela and her daughter. He said he will ask that the officials responsible for freeing Rubi's boyfriend to be fired and he vowed the investigation into Marisela's death will continue.
