A local 10-year-old rubs elbows with a teen idol in the Big Apple.

EL PASO - A Mesita Elementary School student with a "swift" wit.

"The best thing is that now I don't see the world as a place to live. I see it as a story that is not yet finished."

These words concluded the winning essay fifth-grader Nicole Perez wrote as part of Scholastic's "Read Now! with Taylor Swift" contest.  More than 8,000 children from both the United States and Canada competed... but only 10 earned a chance to fly to New York City and meet the country crossover.

"She doesn't show off that she's a celebrity. She just acts as a normal person."

The contest required participants to write a 250-word essay on the most memorable book they've read.  Nicole wrote about "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"... which she checked out from the Mesita Elementary Library as a second-grader.

"I'm very happy for her. She puts a lot of effort into whatever she does."

Nicole's father... Oscar... first broke the news of the win to his daughter... success which she now uses to get fellow classmates on the same page.

"It shows the other children that when you work to your potential and you have the desire to do what you have within from all that you've learned...foundation from home, the foundation from school. Good things will come. The rewards are there."

Nicole says she wants to become a writer in the next chapter of her life to work towards a happy ending.
