Zeta Drug Lord Arrested in Mexico City
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO- Mexican authorities say they've arrested a top drug gang leader they say is the man behind the murder of a U.S. Customs agent in February.
Police captured Jesus "El Mamito" Rejon in a suburb of Mexico City without firing a shot.
Rejon is a founding member and third in command of the Zetas drug gang according to authorities.
The Zetas was started by former Mexican special forces soldiers and is considered the most brutal drug cartel.
The U.S. government offered a $5 million reward for Rejon, whom Mexican authorities say was involved in the shooting of two U.S. immigration agents.
The agents were driving an armored vehicle on a highway from San Luis Potosi to Mexico City when they were ambushed by drug gang members.
One agent, Jaime Zapata, was killed and the other was wounded in the leg.
At the time of his arrest, Rejon was traveling with a Mexico City police officer who was brokering the drug lord's passage through the region.
The officer was also arrested.
