WEST EL PASO- An El Paso woman caught some home burglars who snatched her purse, and she decided to go after them.
She wasn’t able to stop them, but she made a brave attempt by hanging half in and half out of the thieves' getaway car.
Neighbors say the garage door was open Monday afternoon while a woman was getting her two sons ready for a sporting event.
All of a sudden, neighbors heard a scream.
They saw the woman try to jump into an open window of the thieves' getaway car. They'd taken her purse from her unlocked car in the garage.
The burglars continued to speed away, and the woman fell to the pavement bleeding. Witnesses ran to help her, and they called 911.
Debbie Thomas walks her dogs in the same neighborhood twice a day. She didn't witness what happened, but she says that she's always cautious about her surroundings.
"Just kind of keeping my eyes and ears open. You know, when something like that happens, it kind of changes your view. You're a little more cautious,” said Thomas.
Thomas says she has also had a stranger in her garage. A few years ago, she found someone trying to steal from her car.
"I had just come home from a trip to Sam’s, still unloading the car. The garage door was open, and I came outside to find a car in the driveway which I kind of wondered about. There was a gentleman in our garage between our cars, just kind of looking around. I asked if I could help him. He said ,' No, I'm sorry to bother you ma'am,'" said Thomas.
Thomas hopes the neighbors will learn from this and protect themselves.
"There's police patrols through here all the time, but they can't do everything. You have to take it upon yourself to just be more cautious,” said Thomas.
The burglary victim will be okay. She went to the hospital, but she's back home now.
El Paso police are still looking for the two men driving that white getaway car. If you know anything, you are asked to call the police.
