Woman Gives Birth to Baby Without Knowing She Was Pregnant
PORTLAND, OREGON- A Portland, Oregon woman who went to the hospital because she thought her appendix had burst got a big surprise when she learned she was about to give birth.
Kim Nelson said she had no idea she was pregnant.
"I was 39 weeks and didn't have the slightest clue," she said.
Nelson said she didn't have any morning sickness and although she had gained weight, she thought it was because of cysts in her ovaries.
"I thought the weight gain was due to to cysts I had in my ovaries and working at Dairy Queen and eating all that food," she said. "I didn't have the slightest idea that this little bundle of joy was in my tummy."
Nelson said she knows what it's like to be pregnant - she has two other daughters with her partner, Sean Anderson. But this felt different. She said that doctors had also told her that she couldn't have any more children, so she never suspected she was pregnant. Then, last Wednesday, she started having pains in her stomach and rushed to the hospital.
"When I got to the hospital, they're like, 'Can you possibly be pregnant?' and I'm like, 'no!' And then they came back in and they're like, 'Yeah, you're pregnant,'" Nelson recalled.
About four hours later she gave birth to a baby girl. Paige Lynn Dawn Anderson was born November 23 at 8:30 a.m. and weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces. Nelson said her baby is healthy, despite having no prenatal care.
Nelson said the rest of her family was excited to learn of the baby, but also quite nervous since they only had a few hours to prepare. She said that they had already given away all their baby items, thinking they would never have more kids.
Paige's two big sisters, ages 3 and 9, were especially excited to get the news.
Now the family has been relying on the kindness of loved ones and strangers to help them get everything they need for the special new "miracle" in their lives, Nelson said.
