Climate signals point to a calmer, drier week in the Borderland. We start off the week chilly, with area high temperatures again running several degrees below normal. Warming weather returns for mid-week with temperatures nearing the 70 degree mark by the weekend. If you think it's been much colder thus far this winter than last winter, you are spot on. Through February 15th 2009, El Paso International Airport had already logged 8 days of 70+ weather. Contrast that to the zero days of 70+ so far this year, and yes, it's much colder. February hasn't been too bad however, as we're only running about .2 degrees blow normal for the month. However December '09 and January '10 were both chilly months, running 1.4 degrees, and 1.6 degrees behind normal, respectively. We also have to mention how wet it has been as well. 2010 thus far as collected 1.98" of rain. Amazing stuff for the desert. El Niño has also been hitting the area mountains hard in terms of snow. Cloudcroft reports a current snow depth of 30 inches. No wonder the above image shows a roof collapsed caused by the impressive winter snow. All signs point to a more active weather pattern next week as the Subtropical (Southern branch) of the Jetstream regains strength. That will allow for more storms to swing over the Southwest U.S. and will likely bring in cooler temperatures with a wet close to the month. So enjoy this nice weather while you can!
