El Paso – Extra police officers were on campus Monday at Austin High School after EPISD administrators learned about a text message being circulated that warned about a shootout during lunch time.

A parent of a student at Austin High School forwarded the text message to NewsChannel 9. She wanted to remain anonymous but said the text message is being sent between students at the school.

It said, “STUDENTS BE CAUTIOUS! SHOOTOUT TO HAPPEN AT AUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL TODAY AT LUNCH. PLEASE FORWARD TO EVERYONE ON YOUR PHONE. NOT A JOKE.”

EPISD spokesperson Berenice Zubia said the district added 5 extra police officers on campus after learning of the text message. The increased security will remain in place Tuesday as well.

The school, which has a closed campus during lunchtime, was not under a lock down and class schedules were normal.

“At this point there is no evidence to confirm this information,” Zubia said about the text message. “EPISD's Police Department is aware of the situation and has extra presence at the campus.”

EPISD Police are trying to find out where the text message originated.
