EL PASO- Staying fit and being active is the theme of the day at an elementary school in northeast El Paso.

The patriots at Schuster Elementary kicked off their safe routes to school campaign. Mayor John Cook along with several Fort Bliss soldiers walked all the students around the neighborhood. It's part of a program for kids to stay safe, exercise and care for nature.

"To stay fit, eat healthy and have a great time and not use all the gas for cooking," says student Shardona Melia Hayes.

"We are trying to increase the amount of exercise students are receiving. We are encouraging them to walk. They are driving," says Anthony Tomasheski, Schuster Elementary.

Schuster elementary is one of dozens of borderland schools promoting a healthier lifestyle for students.
