An argument turned physical earlier this morning, resulting in the arrest of a Santa Teresa man after he allegedly attempted to strangle his wife.

30 year-old Ricardo Gutierrez allegedly slapped his 31 year-old wife and when she threatened to call police, struck her several more times, and took the telephone away from her.

He then allegedly attempted to strangle the woman but was rebuffed by his 12 year-old son, who jumped in to protecting his mother.

Gutierrez' other three children, ranging in ages from one to nine, were hiding in another room during the incident.

He was charged by Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Deputies with three counts of Battery Against a Household Member and one count of Interference with Communications, all misdemeanors.

Gutierrez, a transport officer at the Otero County Prison in Chaparral, was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $4000 bond.
