LAS CRUCES- A man is under arrested after severely injuring a puppy, causing it to need its leg amputated.

Cody Michael Carmack, 20, was arrested on a warrant today and is charged with one count of extreme cruelty to animals.

Police say Carmack got into an argument with a 21-year-old woman who was his roommate and the owner of the dog. The woman told police that Carmack got so angry that he kicked the 5-month-old puppy and then picked it up and slammed the dog against a metal bed frame.

Police learned that the puppy, a wirehair Terrier named Thor, yelped for about an hour.

A few days later the woman took the puppy and moved into a new apartment. A 38-year-old neighbor noticed that the dog was not using its right rear leg and offered to take ownership of the puppy.

The new owner took the puppy to a veterinarian’s office where he learned that the dog was suffering from a broken tibia and fibula, and that its leg would have to be amputated in order to save the puppy’s life.

The puppy underwent surgery on Friday and was expected to be released back to its new owner sometime this week.

Punishment for this crime is too light. Voiceless - defenseless species victimized by a human beast allowed to walk our planet - able to commit this crime time and time again or worse. The laws need to be intensified regarding the crime for defenseless and voiceless species.

The previous 21 year old woman should be charged with animal neglect. How did she get off? Why wasn't she charged with failure to provide care? When an animal is injured & no vet care is provided this is nothing less then neglect on the original owners part.

Good thing the new owner had the common sense to take the poor thing to the vet. I say the roommate should face charges too. She saw the abuse and the nature of the injuries and did nothing.
