After a disagreement between two Corpus Christi City Council members, Todd Hunter, the State Representative from Corpus is proposing a ban on all texts during public meetings.

In order to do this, the "Open Meetings Act" of Texas must be amended. Current rules only outlaw the transmission of texts or emails between participants in the meetings. Under the Open Meeting Act, all discussions are to be visible to the public.

Hunter wants to outlaw any transmission of an email, text or instant message from any participant in the meetings.

However, some local City Council members say there are some legitimate uses of the technology, including receiving questions from the public and coordination with staff.

Currently, El Paso's City Council has no special restrictions on texts and emails.
