LAS CRUCES- Police are continuing to look for a 60-year-old Las Cruces man who has two arrest warrants for sexually assaulting a teenager and threatening to call immigration authorities if the girl acknowledged the abuse.
Javier Mendez, 60, is charged with three counts of criminal sexual penetration of a child, and one count each of intimidation of a witness and stalking. Mendez is believed to still be in the Las Cruces area but he has family in El Paso, Texas, and could be in that city.
Las Cruces Police have released a photo of Mendez with the hopes of someone recognizing him and reporting his whereabouts.
Las Cruces Police detectives learned that Mendez sexually assaulted the girl for the first time in July 2010 and continued to do so until April of this year. Mendez knew the girl’s mother and assaulted the teen in her home when her mother was at work.
Mendez threatened to report the girl, now 15, and her mother to immigration officials if the teen reported the abuse.
Police also learned that Mendez aggressively followed the girl to and from school, and threatened to harm her friends.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Javier Mendez is asked to call 911 or Central Dispatch at (575) 526-0795.
