Police Search for Alleged Sex Predator in Las Cruces
LAS CRUCES- Police are searching for a man accused of raping a teenage girl and threatening to call immigration authorities if she told anyone.
Javier Mendez, 60, is charged with three counts of criminal sexual penetration of a child, and one count each of intimidation of a witness and stalking. Mendez is believed to still be in the Las Cruces area but he has family in El Paso, Texas, and could be in that city.
Police say Mendez sexually assaulted the girl for the first time in July 2010 and continued to do so until April of this year. Mendez knew the girl’s mother and assaulted the teen in her home when her mother was at work.
Mendez threatened to report the girl, now 15, and her mother to immigration officials if the teen reported the abuse.
Since police began investigating the girl’s claims, Mendez has aggressively followed the girl to and from school, and threatened to harm her friends.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Javier Mendez is asked to call 911 or Central Dispatch at (575) 526-0795.
