Police Arrest Man Who Strangled, Beat Girlfriend Until Unconscious
LAS CRUCES- Police arrested a man who, on several occasions, beat and strangled his girlfriend to the point where she lost consciousness.
Matthew Alexander Simmons, 21, is charged with one count each of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and false imprisonment.
Police say last Thursday Simmons went to his 22-year-old girlfriend’s home and started drinking beer. Early Friday morning, for unknown reasons, Simmons started beating the woman with his fists and strangling her.
The woman lost consciousness on several occasions as the physical assault continued for the next several hours.
Sometime Friday morning, Simmons called his mother who went to the woman’s home and tended to her injuries. Simmons then left the home with his mother. Shortly after they left, the victim called a friend who called police.
The victim’s eyes were swollen shut, and she had visible bruising about her face and neck. She was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Las Cruces Police officers located Simmons on Friday afternoon at his mother’s apartment. He was taken into custody without further incident. Simmons is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $25,000.
