New Citizens Sworn

July 1, 2009 - 3:11pm

This weekend will be a very special 4th of July for 647 new U.S. citizens. They were sworn in at noon today at the El Paso convention center.

One is 60 year old Jesus Gonzalez. He was a Corporal in the Marine Corps in Vietnam where he was wounded on January 31, 1968, and awarded the purple heart. He's lived in El Paso most of his life and always considered himself an American, but he never got his citizenship. He says it's about time.

The other is Ruby Chacon from Juarez. She already works in El Paso and has an 18-month-old daughter, Aranza. She wants to bring up her daughter away from the violence in her home city.
