Man Faces Felony Charges for Shooting Stepson in Face
ANTHONY, NM- Officials have filed felony charges against a man who allegedly shot his stepson in the face on October 2.
The incident happened after a family dispute over an unpaid debt. Investigators say the victim went to his parents’ home in Anthony and began arguing with his mother, who had taken the victim’s dog and a video game as collateral against money he owed her.
During the argument, witnesses say the victim’s stepfather, Grover Herring, 50, pointed a .357 revolver at the victim and fired a single shot, striking the victim in the face. After the shooting, witnesses say Herring repeatedly claimed he did not mean to shoot the victim, but instead meant to scare him into leaving the property.
Family members called 911 immediately after the shooting, and the victim was taken to an El Paso hospital for emergency treatment to the left side of his jaw. A fragment from the bullet also lodged in his chest. He is expected to recover and has been moved to convalescent care.
Herring is charged with aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon causing great bodily harm and aggravated assault against a household member with a deadly weapon. The charges are third- and fourth-degree felonies, respectively.
