LAS CRUCES- A 57-year-old homeless man struck over the head with a board in May died in October as a result of those injuries and the suspect who is believed to have committed the crime has been charged with murder.
Gregory Lee Downey, 51, was indicted by a grand jury Thursday on a second-degree felony count of murder. Downey has been incarcerated at the Dona Ana County Detention Center since May on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
On Tuesday, Oct. 4, Las Cruces Police learned that 57-year-old Lewis “Bill” Myers died as a result of his injuries from the May 2011 incident that occurred at an undeveloped area where several homeless people slept near 999 west Amador Ave.
On May 29, 2011, officers learned that Downey struck Myers with a piece of wood sometime during the previous evening. Downey claimed that he was being harassed by Myers and struck him with the board when he felt threatened by the victim.
Myers was unconscious when he was initially transported to Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. He was subsequently taken to University Medical Center of El Paso with severe head trauma. Myers never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead on Oct. 4.
