LAS CRUCES- An elderly Las Cruces woman was rescued from a fire at her apartment, early this morning but, she died hours later.
Neighbors told us they think they know the fire started. The Puerta Del Sol apartments were blocked off with yellow tape this morning hours after flames and smoke took over one woman's apartment at 505 West Griggs. One neighbor said she was up before 5:00 a.m. and didn't know right away, something was terribly wrong.
“Outside of my living room it was really dark. I saw thick black smoke. It was really strong. I didn't know how bad it was until they came knocking on my door," said Marta Sifuentes, neighbor.
It was a firefighter trying to rescue her and other tenants here.
"I was so nervous, and he was yelling, get outside ma'am! Immediately! And I left,” said Marta.
Firefighters say the fire started right next door to Marta’s apartment and they rescued a 74-year-old woman who was still lying in bed.
"She was being prepared for transport to the Lubbock Burn Center but she was pronounced dead before she was transported,” says Nathan Beyer of the Las Cruces Fire Department.
Investigators believe the fire may have been accidental. The victim has yet to be identified.
