Las Cruces Man Arrested After Attempting to Kidnap Ex-Girlfriend
LAS CRUCES— A Las Cruces man was arrested by Las Cruces police after he allegedly attempted to kidnap his ex-girlfriend Thursday morning.
Rashad Smith, 33, was arrested around 3:00 p.m. Thursday in an apartment at the 2400 block of S. Espina St.
LCPD were called to a home on Mimosa Lane before 11:00 a.m. Thursday after the woman purposely crashed her vehicle onto a sidewalk. The victim told officers that Smith had attempted to abduct her. LCPD learned that Smith had been stalking the woman, and had hid in the rear of her 2000 Honda Accord, waiting for her.
LCPD said that when the victim started driving off, Smith came out of hiding and attempted to abduct her.
The woman has a restraining order against Smith.
The woman struggled with Smith, police said, as she drove down south Main Street. She then purposely crashed her car and ran for safety.
Smith took the woman's car and fled the area.
Smith is charged with attempted kidnapping, robbery, aggravated stalking, assault with intent to commit violent felony against a household member, and tampering with evidence.
He is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash only bond set at $50,000.
