Like El Paso, the Las Cruces City Council is now considering an ordinance that would let police tow cars when the driver has no insurance or driver's license.
The idea came about because Police Traffic Lt. Chris Miller asked the city attorney for permission to tow away those cars. He says a police officer frequently shows up at an accident scene and finds drivers with suspended licenses or uninsured vehicles.
Under the current policy the officer can ask the person to park the vehicle but as soon as the police officer leaves the person drives off as well. Las Cruces city council will vote on the ordinance on Monday.
