Summer has just begun and already Texas has recorded 53 child drownings. Three of those drownings happened in El Paso County. Now the state and the YMCA are combining forces to keep that number from increasing.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and the YMCA say say there are two things you should do to keep your kids safe. One is swimming lessons, the other is keeping an eye on them.
Of the three children who drowned in El Paso County, two toddlers died in backyard pools and a 14-year-old boy died at Wet 'n Wild Water World.
Doug Long with the Westside YMCA says money is not an issue for swimming lessons. If a family can't afford it the "Y" has programs to get the child in for free.
