EL PASO - Julio Guerrero has plenty to worry about after his mother died last Sunday from liver disease. But paying for his mom's funeral, won't be on the list.
Hilda Pena, 42, died leaving behind 6 children, ages 10-23. Guerrero, 19, is now responsible for looking after his four younger brothers and sisters.
The kids, along with dozens of friends and family, took to the streets Wednesday selling bottled water at a Lower Valley intersection. The goal was to raise $2,000 to pay for Pena's burial costs.
After our story about their fundraiser aired Wednesday night, Stephen Vargas, owner of San Jose Funeral Home, agreed to pay 100% of Pena's bill.
"It broke my heart," Vargas said. "We had to do something right away. No kid should have to go through this kind of pressure."
Despite the community's outpouring of support, Guerrero, a new father himself, will now have to provide for his siblings on a minimum wage salary.
"It's just gonna be tough," Guerrero said. "Having a minimum wage job. But anything is possible through God."
Guerrero said that he would like to thank all those who have helped him and his family during this difficult time.
A Rosary for Hilda Pena will be held Friday.
An account to help the kids with food and other necessities has been set up at First Convenience Bank under the name: Julio Miguel Guerrero.
The acct. number is 451-085-661.
