Four People Arrested for Auto Burglaries
LAS CRUCES- Police arrested a 20-year-old man and three teenagers for their involvement in a pair of auto burglaries that were committed early Thursday morning.
William Robert Schroeder, 20, Ricky Martinez, 18, Benjamin Smith, 17, and 16-year-old Jose Eduardo Balderas arrested early Thursday morning.
Early Thursday morning, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to Hickory Loop where someone saw suspicious activity – including someone possibly carrying a shotgun or rifle – in the parking lot of the Drury Suites.
Officers soon found the four young men attempting to hide in a ditch along Interstate 10. The four subjects, later identified as Schroeder, Martinez, Smith and Balderas, were soon detained.
Officers learned that, earlier in the morning, the four broke into at least two vehicles parked along Dartmouth Avenue and Stanford Street. From one of the vehicles the suspects stole a 12 gauge shotgun and a utility knife. From the other vehicle they took several bottles of prescription medication.
The shotgun, knife and several bottles of prescription pills were located on the suspects or in close proximity to where they attempted to hide.
Schroeder and Balderas were charged with one count each of aggravated burglary, auto burglary, larceny and conspiracy.
Smith was charged with prowling, resisting or obstructing an officer, allowing himself to be served and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Smith, already on probation for a previous offense, was incarcerated at the detention center. Martinez was given a criminal citation charging him with resisting or obstructing an officer and possession of or receiving stolen property.
