LAS CRUCES – About 53 students are currently participating in the Mustang Summer School program at Central Elementary School to improve their literacy and math skills.

The program meets 12 hours a week for five weeks. The program’s target population includes kindergarten through third grade.

Students receive direct instruction in literacy and numeracy, with New Mexico Standards and Benchmarks guiding the instruction for both English and Spanish learners. Students also participate in an enrichment class that promotes physical education as well as nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. A technology component is also added as an integral part of instruction to use as a tool for research, writing and mathematical interventions.

Breakfast and lunch are provided to all students through the Las Cruces Families and Youth, Inc. (FYI) program and the LCPS Nutrition Services Department.
