Some El Paso students are counting down the days till the Space Shuttle Endeavour launches off into space. The team of students had their experiment selected for flight on board the spacecraft in February of next year.

The three students, from Transmountain Early College and EPCC, are taking part in the Student Space Flight Experiments Program. Sixteen proposals were chosen out of 400 entries from all over the nation. The project deals with determining if and how micro gravity affects certain communities of bacteria.  The students say they can't wait to see their experiment take off.

"We're really, really excited to see it because we're actually going to get to see it launch in space," said student Jarisma Rodriguez. "We're going to Florida this February, so we're really excited about that."

"This is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, something I probably never even dreamed would possibly happen," said EPCC Student Diana Pahman.

The students had two months to come up with the project, do research and preliminary studies and submit it. A group of scientists reviewed the projects, as well as a national panel in Washington, D.C., who chose the 16 winning projects. The students will get to present the results of their projects in the summer in Washington, D.C.

When you see that shuttle launch and hear the immense roar of the rocket engines producing 200,000 lbs of thrust, just imagine the math and physics involved to achieve liftoff and what it takes to get the orbiter into space. To perform mathematical equations on paper only to see them in action, the shuttle flying on it's correct trajectory according to those equations, is amazing! Just another example of how awesome math and science really are! Congratulations to all involved.

I would like to comment that being one of the selected students is an honor of a lifetime, and am extremely thankful for approaching such an opportunity. It is a thrilling event to see our project sent to space and i'm looking forward to the take off.

CONGRATS!!!! MICHELLE, JARISMA AND DIANA THE CITY OF EL PASO IS HONORED TO HAVE YOU REPRESENT EL PASO IN FLORIDA AND WASHINGTON D.C. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!!!
