Earlier Today: Jury Deliberations In Yara Perez Trial
Jurors began deliberating in the Yara Perez trial at about 2:30 this afternoon. They had not yet handed down a verdict as of 6 o'clock this evening and Newschannel 9 was at the County Courthouse awaiting a decision.
Closing arguments took place this morning and lasted roughly 3 hours. Yara Perez is being charged with capital murder and injury to a child intentionally and knowingly in the death of her daughter, Jaqueline Gonzalez. The 3 year old's body was found badly bruised and beaten in the trunk of Perez's car on November 9, 2007. An autopsy confirmed the cause of Jaqueline's death was blunt force trauma to the abdomen.
Francisco Castañeda, Perez's ex-boyfriend is serving a life sentence without parole after being convicted for Jaqueline's death in 2010.
During closing arguments, the prosecution argued Perez changed her story several times about what happened the night Jaqueline died. The defense argued Perez suffers from battered woman's syndrome.
Yara Perez was found guilty of capital murder after the jury handed down a unanimous decision at approximately 6:30pm today. She was taken into custody immediately. Jurors will return to court on Monday for the punishment phase of this case.
