LAS CRUCES - Main Street in Las Cruces has been closed to traffic for about 40 years. More specifically, it has been shut down to traffic in the form of cars and trucks, with only foot traffic to pass by storefronts. But a sluggish economy in recent years led to only about 50% of downtown businesses remaining occupied.
The last section of Main Street will reopen in February, and cars will once again flow freely though. City officials as well as many business owners think this could lead to a "snowball effect" of growth and change in downtown. The growing popularity of the Farmers and Craft Market, First Fridays as well as other events downtown will be accelerated by the soon to be freely flowing traffic pattern.
