EL PASO- UTEP students are carrying lighter backpacks this semester, because many of their textbooks are digital.

UTEP is offering a record amount of textbooks available for download to students' smart phones and iPads. The bookstore has a record demand for e-textbooks because they're more portable and more affordable.

"With digital text books, you save about 40-60 percent of the price of the new book. And what you do is you just take this little tag downstairs to the registers and they gonna go ahead and charge for you down there," says Fernando Padula, UTEP Bookstore employee.

Things are changing fast. Just a few years ago UTEP students had no options for downloading electronic textbooks.

This is awesome, pretty soon all bulky and environmentally unfriendly textbooks should be a thing of the past (hopefully). Hardcover copies for future reference should only be made available by request.
