EL PASO- While the Sports Commission is happy about a possible Conference USA bid, its own direct support could be in jeopardy.
County Commissioner Sergio Lewis says the El Paso County Coliseum, which is managed by the Sports Commission, sucks up too much of the city's hotel occupancy tax, or "HOT" tax. He wants to work with the sports commission to see if they can't cap the amount of money the county gives to the coliseum.
"One of the main things would be a cap, there has not been a cap on how much revenue they can generate, so sometimes they're generating more revenue than we're making on hot taxes," says County Commissioner Sergio Lewis.
County leaders meet next week to discuss how much money the county gives to the Sports Commission and how to generate more money.
