Coronado Motel Violations a Year Old

Friday, April 3, 2009 - 4:46pm

It doesn't look like a West Side motel will re open any time soon. The coronado has been shut down by the city because of fire code violations. But the danger was discovered more than a year ago. Newschannel 9 has discovered fire inspectors checked out the motel twice in the past year. In February of '08 and again this past October. Both times inspectors found the building did not have a working fire alarm system, not enough smoke detectors or fire extinguishers. But the owner was allowed to remain open for another year.
The fire dept does annual inspections on all businesses.
But "other" code inspections happen only when the development dept. receives a complaint...or after changes are made to a building. The Coronado is shut tight now. We talked to the manager off camera. He said the owner Mr. Ashim Chaudhuri died about a month ago and the property is run by a corporation headed by his widow. He expects the property to be closed for the foreseeable future.
