A Borderland family has made it their mission to help out Locks of Love, an organization that provides hairpieces to children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. After his two older brothers and his father donated, it was the youngest son's turn.
"I'm cutting my hair for the cancer kids," said nine-year-old Chance Courtney after arriving at Westend Hair Salon in West El Paso with his long locks, ready to do his part for Locks of Love.
"He's been trying to get long enough to grow, because they have to have 10 inches to do it. So, it's taken some time for him," said Christopher Courtney, Chance's father.
Christopher says he' been donating his locks for the past seven years and he's gotten his three sons to join him.
"They're all football players so the hair's hanging out the back of the helmet and even when they played years, they said, "Get that girl!" because all this hair's hanging out the back of their helmet," said Christopher.
Christopher says he has donated five times. His oldest son has donated twice and his middle son once.
Christopher says he hopes people who are thinking about cutting their hair will consider donating to Locks of Love.
"It's just nice to be able to give back," said Christopher.
Although Chance was looking forward to a haircut, he had some butterflies in his stomach.
"Since this is my first time, I'm kind of nervous and very excited," said Chance.
After getting his hair washed and brushed, the moment came to cut Chance's long hair.
Proudly showing off the locks he's going to send off to Locks of Love, Chance said of the experience, "It was amazing."
"Are you going to grow it out again?" we asked. "Yes, sir," he replied.
Anyone interested in donating their hair to Locks of Love gets a free haircut and style at Westend. The salon says so far they've had between 300 and 350 people participate in the program this year, but the number's that high thanks to a drive they had a while back.
