Big crowds expected for Ash Wednesday

Wednesday, February 13, 2013 - 7:32pm

EL PASO- St. Patrick Cathedral held four services on Ash Wednesday, a fifth was added earlier in the day for the Cathedral High School students.

The boys were told to sit close and create more room in the pews because even though this service was for them, more and more of the general public was expected to attend this and other Ash Wednesday services. For Catholics, the next forty days of Lent is the highpoint of the liturgical year.

Nationally, since 2002 the numbers of mass attendance outside of Ash Wednesday have slowly increased*, and 9 in 10 adult Catholics who attend mass weekly or more often will abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent.

* An error was made during the original report, the indication was that mass attendance had slowly fallen. An on air retraction of the statement was made immediately following the newscast.
