Since ASARCO's decision "not" to re-open, there's been a lot of talk about what's next for the old plant. The process of answering that question moves ahead tonight as the EPA, Dept. of Justice and TCEQ hold a public hearing.

The bankruptcy courts have decided ASARCO will provide $52-million to cleanup the 100-year-old site, but longtime ASARCO critic State Senator Eliot Shapleigh says $52-million is not enough. He wants the federal government to intervene in the bankruptcy case so ASARCO will be forced to pay more. He says to do the cleanup right would require four or five times that much.
