Two Men on the Loose After Shooting at Las Cruces Police
LAS CRUCES - A scary situation Friday afternoon in Las Cruces after police say a man shot at one of their officers after an attempted burglary.
The chaos began just after 12 p.m. after Las Cruces Police say three men were trying to burglarize a home on the 900 block of Mountain Ave.
A neighbor who reportedly interrupted the burglary was confronted by one of the men with a handgun.
Shortly after, Las Cruces Police spotted a white pickup, believed to be involved in the incident on the 1700 block of Calle Sosa.
"They were taking the driver into custody when one of the passengers of that truck hopped in the driver's seat and started firing at the officers," Las Cruces Police Spokesman Dan Trujillo said.
The driver of the pickup was detained by officers but police believe 20-year-old Jonathan Garcia, one of the two remaining passengers, was the one who pulled the trigger.
The men drove a short distance on Calle Sosa before Garcia and another suspect abandoned the vehicle and ran away, according to police.
"We're canvassing the area and we have Border Patrol, state police, Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, many units within the Las Cruces Police Department looking," Trujillo said.
Several schools and a daycare in the neighborhood were placed on temporary lockdown as a precaution.
