Mari Alvarez - Anchor/Reporter

By Elsa Valenzuela

El Paso is somewhat of a homecoming for Mari.  While she was born in Boston, Mari moved with her family to Las Cruces at the age of 5.  Mari grew up in the city of the crosses, graduating from Oñate High School.

Mari left Las Cruces to attend Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.  There she earned her Bachelor's degree in history and political science.

Mari's first job in news took her to Colorado where she worked at KREY and KREX-TV. There, she was a typical "one man band." She did everything, from shooting and editing her own video to running her own teleprompter.

Next, Mari made the move to Abilene, Texas, where she worked at KTXS-TV as a 6 and 10 p.m. anchor.  It's also where she met her husband, Chris.  They often return to visit family.

When not in the newsroom, Mari enjoys traveling, reading a good book and making the obligatory trip to the gym.  Her parents continue to live in Las Cruces where she's sure to get some home cooking on the weekends.  Mari and her husband live on El Paso's west side with their two cats, Ernest and Lucy Lou.  Mari is a proud member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
