You can get some great deals though the end of the month through a fundraiser being held by more than 20 Kern Place businesses. Each one of them is donating an item for auction with 100% of the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation".

All of the businesses that were asked to participate in the first ever Kern for the cure jumped on board. "We've got about 23 businesses, restaurants, clothing stores, service shops and we're all raising money for the El Paso affiliate of Susan G. Komen," said Maxmina Consigned Designs manager Pifas Silva.

Pifas said the store decided to do something to raise funds and awareness after one of their customers found out she had breast cancer.

"A very close friend of our store was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. She's a young woman here in El Paso, had no history of it in her family," said Pifas.

Every day through the end of October, Kern for the Cure is auctioning off a different item through eBay.

Jessica Escalante, the owner of the newest business at Kern J. Luxe Boutique, says she's happy she got the opportunity to do something with other neighboring businesses.

"I have done it personally so when I got the opportunity to do it as a business, I thought it would be great, just to get our customers involved also," said J.Luxe Boutique owner Jessica Escalante.

Pifas says businesses were very generous with their donations. "One of the unique items is a three-layered cake from a bakery here. And then we also have several clothing stores that are offering entire outfits. We also have gift baskets, gift certificates," said Pifas.

And he says you can land some great deals and help out a great organization.

"People can really get them at a discounted price. Some of the auction items have already sold for 50% of its value. It's really a bargain for people going on eBay," said Pifas. "It's been a good opportunity for each business to showcase themselves but also to contribute to a worthy cause."

You can bid on the items for "Kern for the Cure" at their website or log on to their facebook page. For that information, go to or like Kern for the cure facebook page.
