The FDA commissioned a planel to discuss birth control pills after reports show newer pills are slightly less effective than older ones.

Wednesday, January 24, 2007 - Pills approved in the 1960's allowed less than 1% pregnancy per 100 women taking the pill for a year. But newer pills allow over 2% pregnancies in a similar group of women. Experts say this may be partly because new pills have fewer hormones that could lead to dangerous blood clots and heart disease. Now FDA officials are working to find out if the reduced risk of clots outweighs the increased risk for pregnancy.

Parents of children who suffer from hearing loss may want to consider permanent hearing aids as early as possible. A recent study compared children who were younger than 5 when they underwent surgery to implant a hearing aid to those who were older than 5 at the time of the surgery. They found the younger patients had comparable results to those who were older, in both hearing and device failures. Experts say the earlier the device is implanted, the greater the benefit on speech and language development

Parents are starting to take action against the website MySpace.com. Attorney Generals in dozens of states have filed complaints, and now five families are suing MySpace after five teenage girls reported being sexually assaulted by men they  met through the site.
