Saturday, July 14, 2007 - Sony had two announcements related to PlayStation 3.
"We have a new 80 gigabyte PS3 coming out in August, " said Dave Karraker with Sony Computer Entertainment America. "It will come with the game Motorstorm packed in the box. We're also lowering the price on the current 60 gigabyte model to $499."
Karraker also told me that Sony will introduce a sleeker, more streamlined PlayStation Portable in September.
There is no question that the hot gaming console of the moment is Nintendo's Wii. At E3 they left no doubt that they will continue to set the trend. One of the big announcements they made was the introduction of the Wii Zapper.
"On one hand, it's a new housing for both the Wii remote and the Nunchuck," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo USA's President and CEO. "But the real news is what it represents for game play."
Nintendo is rolling out Mario Kart for Wii in the first quarter of 2008, complete with a wireless "Wii Wheel". They also showed off Wii Fit...a wireless platform similar to an aerobic step that allows you to do exercises and even yoga with on-screen accompaniment.
As for other video games, my spy Scott Steinberg told me that Electronic Arts has a number of new games coming out, including one called Rock Band.
"It's a pseudo-sequel to Guitar Hero 3, but it's not 'official'," Scott told me. "In addition to playing guitar, you'll also be able to play bass and drums. You'll even be able to sing."
Scott also told me that famed director Steven Speilberg is lending his talents to two video games from EA. Both are so top secret, they don't even have names or release dates yet.
Looks like the months ahead will be golden for gamers.
