SUNLAND PARK - The El Paso Electric Company has plans to expand its power plant in Sunland Park, NM but not everyone is on board with the idea.
The New Mexico Environment Department is holding a hearing this morning, seeking public input about the controversial expansion before deciding to grant a new air quality permit to the company.
The Rio Grande Generating Station is in the Anapra neighborhood along the border.
Neighbors spoke out against the expansion at a community meeting last year.
They said they are are worried about the health and environmental effects from the plant's toxic emissions.
A public hearing is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. in the Signature Room at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.
