Happy and Healthy Halloween

EL PASO - There's no sugar-coating it... too many ghoulish goodies now will haunt you later in the form of extra pounds. But Pediatric Nutritionist Ines Anchondo says your little trick-or-treaters can indulge without becoming gluttonous goblins.

"We do know that children that feel restriction are going to eat more and are going to weigh more."

Anchondo encourages parents to use Halloween to teach their children the importance of structured eating habits by treating sweets like any other food.  As an exercise of moderation... she recommends limiting the time and distance your child spends trick-or-treating.

"For very small children, maybe 3, 4, 5 years of age...2 to 3 blocks is plenty."

Once your child has scared up some loot... Anchondo suggests allowing him or her to choose about 10 pieces of their favorite candy to eat only at meal times.

"The child knows that there is a place and time when they're going to be able to access the bag again and eat a little bit more of that candy."

Anchondo also says passing out candy alternatives can prevent holiday pounds from "creeping up" on your family.

"You can even ask your neighbors and say, you know, instead of all of us giving candy, why don't I give little bags of raisins and apples and somebody else can give maybe some construction paper with crayons, 2 or 3 crayons. It doesn't have to be expensive."

Alternatives intended to promote a happy and healthy halloween that could have some trick-or-treaters saying give me a break.
