El Paso - Dr. John Taylor is a podiatrist and surgeon who helps people in need every day.

He's the Wound Care Director at the Mesa Hills Wound Care Center here in El Paso.

Last month, Dr. Taylor took his expertise to Haiti, where he spent a week helping victims of the January 12 earthquake.

Although Dr. Taylor's specialty is feet, he says all the doctors had to help with all facets of health care.

"It was kind of like being in residency all over again, where they just throw you in and you do everything," Dr. Taylor said.

Dr. Taylor went to Port-au-Prince with the University of Miami's Project Medicare.

It's a program that implements wound care that isn't even available here in the U.S. and because they were able to use the latest equipment, the earthquake victims were getting the help they desperately needed.

"We were applying this directly to bone and we were seeing healing," Dr. Taylor said.  "

We were seeing things that, in just the short amount of time I was there, I didn't think I would see.   We were doing stuff on them that's probably 10 years ahead of what we're doing here."

Dr. Taylor says he saw 200-400 patients a day in a tent hospital and the stress of working under those conditions was too much for some volunteers.

"A lot of the volunteers go in there with the thought that they're really gonna be able to help people," Taylor said.

"But by the third day, it really drains you.  You can see that alot of the volunteers, it's almost like they're getting Post Traumatic Stress Disorder."

Still Dr. Taylor says the shocking reality of the devastation should inspire people right here in El Paso to help where they can.
