Community Gathers to Kickoff American Cancer Society
Relay For Life of Las Cruces and Dona Ana County
Las Cruces, NM – April, 2008 – The American Cancer Society invites individuals who want to honor cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) and caregivers, or pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer to join its Relay For Life, scheduled for September 5 – 6, 2008 in Las Cruces.
The Relay For Life Kickoff Rally will be held Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Young Park in Las Cruces. The Relay Kickoff is an opportunity for families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools, companies, etc., to come together to kick off the Relay For Life season and the local event.
Relay For Life, the Society’s signature event, is a life-changing experience that helps us celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and to fight back against a disease that takes too much. This unforgettable event raises awareness and funds to save lives, help those touched by cancer, and empower people to fight back against this disease. With the money raised at Relay, your American Cancer Society is working toward an important goal -- a future without cancer.
For more information or to get involved, please contact Denise Nemiroff at (575) 541-9682 or LCRELAY @yahoo.com.
In 1985, Relay For Life began with one man, Dr. Gordy Klatt, who walked and ran around a track for 24-hours raising $27,000. In the past 23 years, funds raised from Relay For Life has helped the American Cancer Society save lives through expanding research, provided greater access to cancer information, passed legislation to protect public health and provided access to health care, and offered programs and services to cancer patients and their families.
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 13 regional Divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States.
