Family in New Mexico Without Electricity

Friday, August 13, 2010 - 8:09pm

Chaparral, NM - A New Mexico woman is coping in this triple digit heat without electricity.   She blames her landlord who has failed to fix a broken electrical pipe that has been sitting on the grass for more than two weeks.

Leslie Olivas has lived in her Chaparral home for three years. For the past 16 days she hasn't  had electricity.  NewsChannel 9 contacted El Paso Electric and they said that the landlord of the property must hire an electrician to make repairs and then hire a Dona Ana County inspector.

Olivas has no working refridgerator, no air conditioning and has been disabled for the last decade.  This past weekend she had to go to the hospital after suffering a heat-related seizure.  Olivas is fed up with her landlord. "We have no money. We can't take the kids out to eat. You can only live off a toaster and a coffe pot so long. There's nothing, I've run out of money," attests Olivas.

Olivas takes 11 medications each day and cannot breathe without a breathing machine.

Olivas simply wants her landlord to show some compassion.  "Don't treat people like I'll be there when my money is due, you give it to me and then I'm gone and not listen when there's a problem.  This is a problem and she knew about my condition when I moved in."

We contacted the landlord, Maria Dean, and she said both she and her husband are making calls to electricians to get the pole fixed.
