EL PASO - An El Paso Police Officer is dead and another seriously injured after an early morning car crash on the eastside.

Officer Karl McDonough was killed when police say a drunk driver ran a red light and T-boned his squad car.

It happened around 1 a.m. at the intersection of Zaragosa and Saul Kleinfeld.  McDonough, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene.  Officer Ricardo Lopez, the driver of the police car, was sent to University Medical Center with serious injuries but he's expected to recover.
Police believe 19 year-old Alejandro Fierro had been drinking when his car crushed the officer.
Fierro is now charged with intoxicated manslaughter and intoxicated assault.  His bond is set at $50,000.

He should be charged with Capital Murder. And then allow the DA and the Lawyer to plead it out... or face 12 of his peers.

Yes he had on his seatbelt.. the passenger seat in a police car is very crowded, there is a computer terminal that covers part of it, and if hit from the front it would drive that terminal into the passenger area..

The 19 yo kid Sped up to beat the yellow... why is it not being reported that this kid is related to FRED LOYA, Mr. Car Insurance?

What does it matter if he is related to fred Loya,if someone related to you was accused of wrong doing, should you be held accountable?

The part that gets me is that the drunk driver gets off so easily with intoxication manslaughter and assault. This is murder. The driver knew he was drunk when he chose to drive, when we start making the punishment fit the crime maybe then people will start thinking twice about driving drunk. Usually when you kill a cop you get charged with capital murder, this should be no different.

I was wondering if the officer was wearing is seatbelt, especially when they inforce it for everyone else. I believe if speed was not a factor if he would have had his seatbelt on it might have saved his life..or atleast some scratches like the other officer that was involved...and yes all these kids are all drinking whom ever he was with should have taken better care of this young man..Last time I checked drinking age is what 21.. he is not leagal to even drink..

A Police Officer is dead, another hurt. And yet the last word of the report is how much it will cost this guy to get out of jail. I just don't get it anymore.

No one is exempt from being a victim to a drunk driver. The problem is we've allowed this to continue. We need to take action within our own lives and the lives of those around us.The person that killed this officer knew the danger he posed and knew better then to get behind the wheel. And the other thing is that he was most likely was not alone before he before he drove, there were others around him that should have spoken up but didn’t. Lets End Drunk Driving Texas.
