EL PASO- In two weeks, Big Brothers Big Sisters is hoping to strike it big with its 12th annual fundraiser. "Bowl for Kids’ Sake" is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the non-profit organization. And they're inviting the public to come out and have a little fun and help them raise some money at the same time.
You would think Jazmine Silva is out bowling and having a great time with her little sister. But, in fact, Jazmine met Alyssa Rodriguez, 9, two years ago when Jazmine became involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters.“I have two sisters by blood but to me she's like a sister, like an adopted sister to me,” says Jazmine Silva.
“I feel like I’ve known her since I was two,” says Rodriguez.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentoring organization that's been around for more than a century, but in El Paso it was re-established in the year 2000. “We find volunteers and we match them one on one with at-risk children who need that additional support, that good role model influence in their life,” says Rebecca Romero of Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The mentors take participants on outings and are there for them when they need them. “What we usually talk about is what we want to do as we get older,” says Rodriguez. “I think she gets a lot out of the relationship, but I do as well. I love her so much!” says Silva.
In order to raise funds, the non-profit organization is holding the 12th annual "Bowl for Kids’ Sake” at Bowl El Paso, in East El Paso on July 23rd.
“Teams are comprised of 5 people and we ask that each team member raise $60, so it's a $300 total for that 5 person team,” says Romero.
The team gets to bowl for two hours with refreshments provided. A D.J. will be on hand and he'll have plenty of prizes. “And it's great prizes like salon gift certificates, restaurant gift certificates, teeth whitening, all sorts of neat prizes,” says Romero.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is hoping to fill up all 40 lanes during each two hour session. And Rodriguez, who'll be there, is hoping everyone comes out and supports the organization.
“It's going to be a lot of fun because we want this program to stay,” says Rodriguez.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake” is being held at Bowl El Paso. That's located at 11144 Pellicano Dr. The event is being held on Saturday July 23rd from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information go to http://bbbsep.org
